How to Use TikTok Ads to Drive Shopify Store Traffic and Sales
By Ecomm11 Team ·
TikTok ads suit Shopify stores whose products can be shown, demonstrated or unboxed in a short vertical video. The platform rewards creative that feels native and punishes polished adverts, and the buying behaviour differs from Meta or Google, so a copy and paste of your existing campaigns rarely works. This guide covers the setup, campaign structure, creative approach and measurement that give a Shopify store a fair test on TikTok.
Set up the account and tracking before spending anything
Start by creating a TikTok for Business account and an ad account inside it, separate from any personal TikTok profile. Then install the official TikTok app from the Shopify App Store and connect it to your ad account. The app installs the TikTok pixel on your store and sets up the standard events, such as view content, add to cart, initiate checkout and complete payment, without you editing theme code. It also enables server-side event sharing, which helps the platform see conversions that browser tracking misses.
Once installed, place a test order on your own store and check the events screen in TikTok Ads Manager to confirm each event fires with the right value and currency. If your store also uses Google Tag Manager or a customer events setup in Shopify, make sure you are not firing the pixel twice. Our guide to Shopify conversion tracking covers the general checks that apply to every ad platform. The app also syncs your product catalogue to TikTok, which you will need later for catalogue-based video shopping ads.
Match the objective to what you actually want
TikTok Ads Manager asks for an objective at the campaign level, and choosing the wrong one is the most common early mistake. Traffic objectives buy clicks cheaply but from people who are unlikely to purchase. Video view objectives build reach but do not train the system on buyers. For a store, the website conversions objective, optimised for complete payment, is the right default even at low budgets, because it tells TikTok exactly which people to find.
If your pixel is new and has not recorded many purchases, you can optimise for add to cart for a short period to give the algorithm a signal, then move to complete payment once purchases start recording. Product sales campaigns that use your synced catalogue are the next step, particularly for stores with many products, but a solid conversion campaign first will make them work better.
Keep the first campaign structure simple
Resist the urge to build many small ad groups. Create one campaign with the conversions objective, and inside it a small number of ad groups that differ by one thing only, such as broad targeting versus an interest group, or one country versus another. Within each ad group, upload several distinct videos rather than one.
- Targeting: start broad, with only the location, language and age range you need. TikTok's delivery does most of the audience finding through the creative itself.
- Placement: keep TikTok only and turn off placements on partner apps until you have data to compare.
- Budget: set it at the ad group level, give each group enough to record conversions daily, and avoid editing it more than once a day.
- Schedule: run continuously rather than restricting hours until you know when your buyers are active.
Let the ad groups run through their full learning period before judging them. Frequent edits restart learning and make the results impossible to read.
Make creative that looks like TikTok, not an advert
Creative decides most of the outcome on TikTok. The videos that work are vertical, shot on a phone or made to look that way, and show the product or the problem in the first moment. Talking directly to camera, quick demonstrations, before and after sequences, unboxings and honest reactions all perform well. Studio product shots with a logo and a tagline usually do not.
Plan a batch of videos that each open with a different hook: a question your customer asks, a common mistake, a surprising use of the product, or a straightforward "here is what arrived" opening. Use on-screen captions, because many people watch without sound, and keep the branding light until the end. Creator content is the fastest way to get this material. The principles in our post on UGC in Shopify Facebook ads apply on TikTok too, with an even stronger tilt towards the raw and unpolished.
When a video posted on your own TikTok profile, or by a creator who has given you permission, performs well organically, run it as a Spark Ad. Spark Ads promote the original post, keeping its likes, comments and shares, and they tend to feel more natural than a video uploaded straight into Ads Manager.
Send the click somewhere that keeps up
TikTok viewers click on impulse, and a slow or confusing page loses them fast. Link directly to the product shown in the video, with the same variant, and make sure the page loads quickly on a mobile connection, shows the price and the add to cart button without scrolling, and states shipping and returns close to the button. If the video mentions an offer, the offer needs to be visible on the page immediately, ideally applied automatically through a link with the discount built in.
TikTok also offers instant pages and in-app shopping formats that load inside the app. They are worth testing for stores whose product pages are heavy, but keep a direct-to-store version running for comparison, because in-app formats can make your own analytics harder to reconcile.
Read the results and scale carefully
Judge campaigns on purchases and cost per purchase from the pixel, checked against orders in Shopify carrying the TikTok UTM parameters, not on views, clicks or click-through rate. TikTok's attribution window and Shopify's order reports will never match exactly, so look at the direction of both rather than expecting one number.
When an ad group is clearly profitable, increase its budget in modest steps rather than doubling it, and duplicate winning videos into a new ad group with a fresh audience rather than piling everything into one. Retire videos as their frequency climbs and their results fade, and keep feeding new hooks into the campaign every week or two. For a broader framework on reading ad data, see our guide to analysing Shopify ad campaign data.
Add retargeting once you have traffic
Once the pixel has collected visitors, build custom audiences from video viewers, product page viewers and people who added to cart but did not buy. Show these groups a different message: a review, an answer to a common objection, or a reminder of the offer. Video shopping ads that pull from your synced catalogue work well here, because they show people the exact product they viewed.
Keep the retargeting budget small relative to prospecting. It converts well but runs out of people quickly, and a retargeting ad group with a large budget will simply show the same people the same ad too often. Exclude recent purchasers from every retargeting audience so you are not paying to reach customers who have already bought.
Where to start this week
Install the TikTok app, confirm the events fire with a test order, and film a handful of phone-shot videos with different hooks. Launch one conversions campaign with broad targeting, leave it alone through learning, and measure it on purchases. That first run will tell you whether TikTok is a channel worth building for your store.
